As downtown Greenville has grown and changed over the years into one of the most lively downtowns in the Southeast, so have the city’s festivals adapted to that changing culture. Fall for Greenville proudly showcases some of the finest things Greenville has to offer, from their beautiful downtown area to the ever-growing food scene that the revitalized downtown has spawned. We seem to be in the midst of Greenville’s Golden Era, and once again the city has put together a music and entertainment lineup befitting of what upstate residents deserve.
This years lineup not only showcases local talent from the Upstate, but brings in rising talent from across South Carolina. And isn’t it the cherry on top that Shovels and Rope, South Carolina’s most prominent Americana band, headline the festival for the first time, rising through the ranks organically after playing Greenville events over the years. Gone are the days of them playing a 2:30 slot at Artisphere. Now they’ll be headlining the mainstage on Saturday night, surrounded all Saturday by locals who have equal opportunity to make a similar national impact as Shovels and Rope has since breaking out in 2012. From multiple late night television performances and magazine covers, to winning song of the year at the 2013 Americana Music Awards, Shovels and Rope have done a huge part in not only putting South Carolina music on the map, but proudly letting everyone know that their roots dig deep in that sandy John’s Island soil.
Take into the account the entertainment value of the music, this year’s lineup is full of performers. From the seven piece Southern soul band which is St. Paul and the Broken Bones to the windmill acoustic guitar playing of road tested and female approved Rhett Miller of the Old 97’s, this lineup has something for everyone. And even if you haven’t heard of many of the bands, you’re guaranteed to be entertained. Sturgill Simpson is a rising country star, known for being anti pop-country, adapting his own new form of “outlaw country”. From the national acts to the locals and regionals, you’ll notice no drop in talent or performance.
The lineup can be overwhelming, so next week leading up to Friday we’re going to make our top picks for each day. That in itself will be tough. If you’re attending for the music, just plan on bouncing around. The stages are conveniently close and the scheduling overlaps so you can hear a good amount of each set.
